In March, 1983, Gulfstream Aerospace Company began to develop the GIV business jet, the predecessor of the G450 business jet, as an improved engine of Gulfstream III business jet and a derivative model with a lengthened fuselage. The redesigned wing can reduce the cruise resistance, increase the oil carrying capacity, and increase the range of the aircraft by more than 555 kilometers.
The first GIV business jet made its first flight in September 1985, and was certified by FAA in April 1987, and put into commercial service in the second half of the same year. This model was upgraded to a special version of GIV-SP business jet in 1993, and later renamed as G400 business jet.
The research and development of G450 business jet was started in 2001. This improved aircraft is slightly longer than the G400 business jet, and adopts the nose part of the G550 business jet and a larger cockpit. The G450 business jet was certified by FAA in August 2004. It started production in the second half of the same year and stopped production in 2018.
